SIRTF Going Aloft

August 2003:
SIRTF, enclosed in its protective payload canister, is hoisted to the top of Launch Complex 17-B, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The canister is designed to protect the one-of-a-kind observatory as it is transported to the pad and placed on top of the Delta II rocket that will carry it to orbit.
