MIPS Simulated Observation
June 2003:
This simulated image, prepared by the MIPS instrument team at the University of Arizona, displays what the sky may look like at a wavelength of 70 microns. The simulated one-hour observation reveals both point-like sources, most of which are galaxies beyond the Milky Way, and extended "cirrus-like" emission from interstellar dust within our own Galaxy. At this wavelength, SIRTF will detect astronomical sources 100 times fainter than any previous far-infrared survey.
